Question 1

How often should a chimney be swept?

Accepted Answer

Once a year for any chimney that is used regularly, ideally in late summer before the heating season. If you burn a lot of wood, or burn it green, a second sweep mid-season is worth it.

Question 2

How do I know if mine needs repair rather than a sweep?

Accepted Answer

Look for cracks in the crown, crumbling mortar, white staining on the brick, rust on the damper or cap, or water marks on the ceiling near the stack. Any of those means water is getting in.

Question 3

Do you work through the winter?

Accepted Answer

Yes for sweeping, inspections, and emergency repairs. Masonry work like repointing and crown rebuilds needs mild, dry weather to cure properly, so we schedule it for a warm spell or spring.

Question 4

What does it cost?

Accepted Answer

Sweeping and inspection are priced by the type of appliance and the height of the stack. Repairs are quoted after we have seen them. You get the number in writing before we start, and it does not move.
